FEATURE: The Game Over Screens of SMT

intro11
Now, I’ve got a lot of love for the Shin Megami Tensei series.  One of the things that doesn’t get talked about a lot, however, are the totally awesome Game Over sequences.  It’s better that they’re impressive, I think, because you’ll be seeing them a lot since the strength/weakness balance in these games is insane.

I don’t have that much to say about these, but here’s some screenshots and an explanation anyway.  Some of the screenshots are a little blurry, I apologize.

SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI III: NOCTURNE

“The comfort of death will come to men and demons alike by the guidance of the Great Will.”

It’s not really the text that makes this awesome, more the fact that the camera pulls away from your dead body up a gigantic spiral of angels that leads from you and infinitely up.  It’s pretty cosmic.

SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: DEVIL SUMMONER III: RAIDOU KUZUNOHA VS. THE SOULLESS ARMY

I can’t find a video of this one, and lack the equipment to take my own video/screenshots.  Basically, when you fail, you wake up on the floor back at the training hall at the beginning of the game.  There, you are surrounded by the ghosts of all the title holders before you (there are 15 of them), promptly shamed, and then killed.  It’s pretty brutal.

I’ll add screenshots after I dig up some Let’s Play videos with people inevitably failing.  It’s easier not to fail in this game, though, since the sword always seems to do okay damage (provided you’ve leveled your attack).

PERSONA 3: THE ANSWER

“He who had been your proof, your life itself… the answer has been lost, never to be found again…”

When you die in Persona 3, Igor gives a little speech.  Igor is the guy that only you can see that helps you unlock “potential” within yourself and combine Personas to use in battle.

This one may only be awesome if you are a girl, and also have played both parts of this game.  This game over screen is a lot like the P3 Journey game over screen, except… I dunno, more romantic?  For a long time, you figure Aigis & Co. are searching for the main character from the first game.  So when Aigis dies… well, then she can’t find him anymore.  I liked it, anyway.

The first part of this one is also a little more concrete about death than the game over screen in The Journey.

This one isn’t all that cool, but I thought I might as well include it for reference for The Answer game over screens.  It strikes you as sort of poetic the first time, but then you see it about 500 more times, and you just mash the buttons to get it over with.

The only other games in the series I’ve played are Demon Slayer and Persona, but those ones didn’t have Game Over screens worth mentioning.  I’ll do a sequel post if the end screens in DDS I/II, P2 IS/EP, DSIV, or Devil Survivor are worth noting, though.
